- Factual narrative
- The pilot reported that, while departing from a remote, snow-covered, glacier camp, which required a hovering backwards departure from a helipad site, the helicopter’s vertical stabilizer struck a snow berm, resulting in substantial damage to the vertical stabilizer and tail boom assembly. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the helicopter that would have precluded normal operation. The pilot noted that flat light conditions made it difficult to discern the height of the helicopter over the uneven, snow-covered terrain immediately surrounding the helipad site.

- Was outbound to pick up passengers to bring them back to base. I was the sole occupant of the aircraft at the time. During my climb out I noted a few eagles circling the Ridgeline above at about my 11 o clock. After my climb over a Ridgeline I proceeded to level off clear of the eagles on my left. There was a loud bang followed by my right door window shattering. I immediately reduced power to slow and put in left pedal to protect my tail rotor from any dabrey. I then turn around and call tower for an immediate arrival back to base. The main bird body was not found inside the aircraft but there was blood splatter and feather on the back wall.
