- MEDICAL TRANSPORT. While in cruise flight at night, under NVG flight mode, a moderate "thump" was heard on the lower, left-hand side of the nose area of the aircraft. Pilot recalls seeing a small "flash" in the landing light illumination immediately prior to hearing the impact. The impact was noticeable, but was evident that the poor creature was of small stature. The pilot immediately announced what he suspected had happened and began checking all flight control functionality, as well as any engine and transmission indications. All checks seemed normal. The crew discussed the situation, and agreed that the impact sounded as if it contacted the lower left half of the aircraft nose, and nothing was heard nor felt on any rotating components. In-flight inspections of the windscreen via flashlight were safely made and no streaks or skid-marks were seen. Post-flight inspection found a small, bloody, fuzzy, meaty spot, about the size of a golf ball, on the left-hand side of the nose frame, below the left windscreen. The spot appeared to have fur, not feathers, as if a small bat. No other damage, blood spots, or other matter were found anywhere on the aircraft. Ironic thing is, pilot has recently decided to fly higher at night due to all the talk of the increase in bird activity. The aircraft was at 2,000 MSL at time of impact. Never would have expected a bat to be that high. Pilot will now fly even higher at night, closer to the recommended 3,000 . NOTE: OWNER/ OPERATOR EQUIPMENT OPERATING LEASES LLC/ AIR METHODS.
